Frank had his own little Groundhog Month, didn't he?

It looks like he got to know everything about that town, and when he finally got everything right, he didn't just get his life back, but his eye too!! ...lucky bunny. Donnie saved not only his sweety's and furry ghost friend's lives, but also his mother's, sister's, and her friends' lives as well!

Frank could have haunted every person in that town until he finally offered redemption to his own murderer. The greatest tragedy (imo) was that the sacrifice was not only Donnie's life, but also the love affirmed between Donnie and Gretchen in the timespace they shared together.

My question to the creator of this story is...

What was Frank's story and what will he do with what he knows?
Does he wake up thinking that it's a dream?
Does he tell HIS girlfriend, Donnie's sister?
Does he help Drew Barrymore find more work?
Does he get a haircut, and get a real job?
Does he seek out the Psychiatrist whose patients always wake up in strange semi-erotic positions?
Or does he just go to Burningman?

I'd like to know.

Anyway, my stepmom just watched this movie and came up with a very interesting idea.
She thinks that Roberta Sparrow and Karen Pomery are either the same person(through time travel though I don't think so) or they are somehow related.
It makes lots of sense really.
Examples of proof:
-Pomery not only pretty much hooked Gretchen and Donnie up, but also led Donnie to Sparrow's cellar because the last thing she told him about was "cellar door"(all of this leads up to frank's murder all in all)
-Pomery didn't wake up at the end when all the "manipulated living" did from their dreams(just sorta a strange point that makes her different from everyone else)
-Sparrow used to work as a science teach. at Middlesex High and Pomery's husband is the science teacher and had the book. Pomery's choice of book was ironic compared to what happened at the school(The Destructors, a good storry also)

Well, I don't know if you guys really dug that deep into the whole movie, and I don't even know if any of this is relevant and worth while, but I found it interesting.
Tell me what you guys think!

I think the original version was far better because it made you have to really think and invest yourself in its ideas to come away with all of its various possible meanings and ideas... it has now become a "star trek" time travel/alternate reality thingy to me... i feel SO let down by this "new" cut. At least the original is safe and sound on dvd- the way Frank would want it.

well i finally got to see the directors cut. its playing in chicago at the AMC river east 21, which BTW is a really nice theatre. awesome digital sound, spacious stadium seating.

it was really nice to see the movie on the big screen. however, i can't say that i like the DC more than the original. it does spell things out much more and you do get several great extra scenes e.g. the father/son talk & drew barrymore's 'whatever fits' comment along with the improved sound. and there are extras that are not included on the dvd release. so it definitely is worthwhile to see. but i didn't really like the placebo revelation. i prefer the ambiguity of the original where it could be either that donnie is crazy and the events are not 'real', or that donnie merely appears crazy and the events are 'real'. Richard Kelly has said that he felt it was very important to include the placebo scene, but i think it would be better without it.

i dont see why it would be so important anyway. all it says is that in this alternate reality, whether it be: donnie's dream, donnie's psychosis, or donnie's actual experience, they are placebos. it has no significance to the viewer other than to close off the possible interpretation towards it being donnie's dream or psychosis. i think Kelly did not like people coming away from the original version thinking donnie was paranoid schizophrenic. but i don't think thats necessarily bad. there is a possiblity that what we think of as paranoid schizophrenic is actually people being able to access some other levels of reality. so donnie could have been what we call 'crazy' and yet also experience alternate reality/time travel/touched by god too.
Wed Apr 21, 2:29 AM ET

By Borys Kit

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Donnie Darko," a cult drama starring Jake Gyllenhaal (news) as a disturbed teenager, is getting a new theatrical release, featuring 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage.

Newmarket Films, which released the film in 2001, is unveiling a director's cut at the Seattle Film Festival on May 29. It plans to release the film theatrically in Seattle before moving into other markets later in the summer. The new version will also have new visual effects and music.

"Even though I am proud of the theatrical version of the film, I've always felt that the story was somewhat compromised in order to come in under two hours," said "Darko" writer-director Richard Kelly. "With this version I feel like I've finally been able to complete the film."

"Darko" grossed just $515,545 at the domestic box office but has since gained a following on DVD where it has grossed more than $10 million domestically. It also stars Jena Malone (news), Drew Barrymore (news), James Duval (news) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (news).
I always have to ask..what's the message/point here?

I'm sure we can decide there were many made in DD,
But for me, the BIG ONE was something like:

Maybe random senseless deaths (or other events/actions)
really are not so random, we just only have a piece
of what may be really going on....

Somehow that message provides me with great comfort

It also reminds me of my favorite mystery of the movie ....

Where the heck did that engine come from?

To me that element removes all theories that
Donny was just crazy or it was just a dream.
also, if you watch the commentary, the director is told by someone famous (i forget who) that his movie comes down to one line, "kids have to save themselves these days, because the parents have no clue." which is in the deleted scene where drew barrymore is talking with donnie in the classroom as she's packing here stuff.
anyways, there is way great stuff in the deleted scenes, so let's talk about it!

so, what are some of your favorite scenes or parts from Darko?

one of my favorites is when Donnie tells Gretchen "i'm really glad that school was cancelled today." and she asks why and he says, "because you and I would have never had this conversation." And then she calls him weird as a compliment. :)

I love this exchange because it kind of clues in the viewer to pay attention to the results of Donnie's actions under Frank. For every action, there is a consequence...some better than others.

Ultimately, the main "action" is Donnie not getting out of bed at the end of the movie after seeing what will happen to Gretchen in the parallel universe. If he gets out of bed and saves his own life, Gretchen will die. If he accepts his fate, Gretchen will never meet him and not get run over. So he sacrifices himself for the good of those he loves.

I think the heartbreaking thing about the movie is that the people he loves will never understand his sacrifice. They will think of it as a tragic accident.

"we're all accidents....waiting to happen."

Which leads me to another favorite scene: The very last scene when Gretchen waves at Donnie's mom even though she doesn't know her. We understand their bond but they don't. It seems like they still feel it but aren't sure why. wow...

mindblowing movie.

so, what are your favorite parts??

Watched Donnie Darko for the 100th time last night and I just gotta vent to people who understand:

SUCH AN IMPORTANT MOVIE TO ME! How it captures the nuances of that era. October 1988, I was a sophmore in a private high school in Pebble Beach, CA. A few kids I knew had died for various reasons & I got mononucleosis from my first time having sex with a girl. I found myself totally on my own path of not taking part in the system that was totally set up for me. I spent my time dismantling it. I was an estranged kid, I knew everyone, but kept mostly to myself. Kind of like I am now. I know a lot of people, but, I sort of refuse to stay streamlined knowing the mystery of life lay undeniably undefined..

At the end of my sophomore year, the deans pulled me into a room and asked me if I was on drugs, which I wasn't. A psychiatrist tried prozac and lithium on me and when I took myself off of all of it, my one psychiatrist told me she couldn't be my psychiatrist unless I took my medication. I gave her the finger and never saw her again. No one could figure me out, not even me. I was always given the label of "having potential" but never fully realizing it. Something that I have worked with therapists and continue to work with my current therapist on. They even sent me to reform school in Italy for my senior year! An experience that I ran away from after three months. I finally semi-healed myself and got my GED at 22, after which I got my "high school piercing" (my bellybutton) and went straight to my therapist to show it off.

A cliff's notes version of my life back then, I have lots of stories.

Anyway, this movie is like salve for my wounds back then. It feels like someone is looking at the general experience and perspective of mine at that time and validating it! It allows for me to grasp that time, and forgive myself for being a radical & thoughtful individual.

Not to mention, that movie makes me ok with my present state of being. After seeing it, I felt happy with life and that mysterious path that I invest so much energy into contemplating my individuality on. At the end of the movie last night, I found myself laughing about everything. I felt so much less stressed out. I love it when a movie can do that. Sort of like I was empowered by the flaws in my life, like those are the worm holes to pay attention to.

It hits me deep, so much that it makes me gag.
