so when Donnie was saved by the jet engine, no one knew what it was and the govt were all paranoid...why is it at the end when he dies, they know what it was?

I guess it doesn't *really* matter but it's something I wondered when watching the directors cut the other night.

what do you mean no one knew what it was? They carried out the jet engine on a crane... I think everybody knew what it was. They did not know where it came from though, and I don't think that changed at the end. Was there a part where they stated that they knew the source of the engine after he was killed by it at the end?

They never mention if they know or not. Ive sometimes wondered IF they knew, but if they did I just figured time had basically been restored and the jet engine may have fell from a traceable source, since donnie had interviened in time. Id prefer to know how much everyone really remembers when they wake up as donnie dies.. BUT, I try not to think to hard in this movie, just sit back and enjoy.

that's what I was thinking... if the timeline was restored, most of the mystery from the initial "time-fork" would have vanished.

        or maybe not.

guess we will have to wait for the "nagging, lingering question" cut ....

I think I recall the director saying in the original commentary that the engine is an "artifact" from the tangent universe that is a mystery to all involved...

well in the beginning sis says "they don't even know what it is" or something of that nature, then at the end when gretchen rides up on her bike and asks what happens the little boy says he got smuched by a jet engine....maybe I'm just reading too much into a small detail. you know how it goes...I hope?

              :)

not to be nit-picky... but elizabeth darko says " they don't even know where it came from..." and samantha darko questions later in the hotel, where did the jet plane go? and elizabeth answers (rather snarkily) "they don't know samantha..."

                game on!

ahhh yes....where it came from, not what it was.

                  makes sense now....

                  thx

I agree with Nathan, that is a problem that I experience while watching a lot of american movies, how the story is spelled out with no ambiguity.
A lot of French cinema leaves points of the story open for interpretation, a way for the viewer to read their own experience into that of the story.

anyone watch carnivale on HBO? This show makes you work to know what's going on. It's awesome, but addictive and people seem to get way obsessive about it. I am definately one of those people!

Meg, check season 1 out on dvd...6 disks total. I'm not sure how a video store would rent them, I guess all seperately like netflix does.

very cool and fun, check it out. and be prepared to be creeped out!!

if anyone has followed the donnie darko website they would know that they don't know where it came from, and have interveiws recorded in later years (1991) with the FAA still searching..
