Did anything in the movie happen at all or was it all a fantasy based on Donnie foreknowledge that the engine would crash and kill him?

in the DVD commentary, the director (Richard Kelly) says that he wanted to put in clues that led in several directions:

    1) Was Donnie just crazy, and/or dreaming the whole movie?

    2) Did Donnie really have superpowers (ie. to turn back time at the end of the movie)?

personally, Kelly thought of 2) as being the most correct explanation, but he intentionally cut several things that would have given it away or made it too obvious.

I think this really worked, because that's what I thought too, immediately after watching the movie, but I wasn't absolutely *sure*.

I thought of it as some sort of branch of time, or alternate universe, that was destined to end, and Donnie just somehow knew about it.

I don't know if this is "correct" and probably has somthing to do with ideas in physics I've ran across - I wonder if Richard Kelley was thinking about that kind of stuff.

My take on it was that Donnie, through his medications and possible paranoid schizophrenic personality was able to see ahead - maybe through his dreams. Then after witnessing everything bad that would happen decided to save gretchen by letting the accident with the plane engine happen, sparing gretchan from ever meeting or gettin involved with him. i don't know everytime i watch i start thinking...

I never thought of that. But now that you mention it that does make the part where he was hearing Gretchen in his memory (mind's ear) talking about going back and taking all the bad things away, make a lot more sense.

It seems so obvious now. Did anyone else miss that?

but was it just gretchen he was saving, but his universe/world in general? i think we can take it to a bigger picture.

i tend to think of it as donnie getting a chance that some wish they had...the opportunity to see what would happen to life if you escaped death and essentially the path that god set down for you, if you believe in that stuff. i think the discussions with the science teacher are too important to dismiss.

During the commentary on the DVD, Kelly mentions that Donnie's pills are actually placebos. This information is not apparent in the film, but it is made clear in one of the deleted scenes.

i saw the rerelease tonight and thought i'd add to this
i think the old lady, in writing her book, laid out donnie's journey into schizophrenia followed by esp visions. the fuselage that hit his room the first time was from the plane that killed his mother and little sister at the end of the movie - there was a time schism created in the storm that donnie watches from the hill, leading to the confused non-plane crash. donnie rerouted future events by rewinding events and returning to his bed to die the night of the freak accident, protecting his girlfriend and family and preventing his mom from getting on the flight with his kid sister. although he spared patrick swayze the child molester.
so i think the area where donnie lived had an active wormhole that the old woman discovered in her own schizoid journey..
sort of reminds me of mullholland drive
now i need to listen to the extras on the dvd..

The fact that what was happening to poor ol' Donnie was apparently due to Psychic sensitivity. Placebo? That expains a lot. Being a sensitive, myself, and on drugs, I can identify with Donnie a whole lot. Sometimes, one just "knows."
